Join the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 7pm, as filmmaker Bud Force and photographer John Langmore discuss the making of their documentary film, COWBOYS. Told in the cinematic tradition of classic westerns, COWBOYS offers the opportunity to ride alongside modern working cowboys on some of America’s largest and most remote cattle ranches. COWBOYS documents the lives of the men and women working on “big outfit” cattle ranches – some of which are more than one million acres – and still require a crew of horseback workers to tend large herds of cattle. Filmed on locations across the American West, COWBOYS features historic ranches in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Montana, Wyoming, and Nevada. Narrated through first-hand accounts from the cowboys themselves, the story explores the rewards and hardships of a celebrated but misunderstood way of life and the challenges that lie ahead for the cowboys and ranches critical to providing the world’s supply of beef. COWBOYS is currently being filmed and is scheduled for release in 2018.
John Langmore will also be showing and discussing photographs from his five-year project documenting America’s working cowboys. John traveled to 12 big outfits to create this body of work which is set to be published as a book next year. A former working cowboy himself, he will be sharing his intimate knowledge of this unique American icon and the state of his existence at the outset of the 21st century.
An award-winning filmmaker based in Austin, Force has been involved in the agriculture industry most of his life. After graduating from Texas A&M University, he has spent the past decade directing and producing commercials, brand films, and documentary shorts.
