The time is almost here, grab your wands and get ready for a little magic! College Station is hosting the U.S. Quidditch Association’s Southwest Regional Championship at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex Feb. 18-19, 9am-5pm.
Quidditch is a mixed gender, full contact sport that combines elements of rugby, dodgeball, and Olympic handball. It is played with seven players to a team, all of which are vying for control of four balls on an elliptical pitch, while mounted on brooms. Players score goals with the quaffle (a volleyball) and the snitch, a neutral yellow-clad athlete who attempts to avoid capture.
Teams from Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas will compete in the Championship for the opportunity to attend the US Quidditch Cup. Twenty-one teams are currently registered to play in the Southwest Regional Championship, with registration remaining open until Feb. 7.
To qualify, teams have to have competed in three tournaments in their region. Texas A&M will be represented by two teams — Texas A&M Quidditch and The Silver Phoenix.
In addition to the Quidditch playing, Bryan College Station Sports + Events is excited to host a beer garden on site. Athletes and spectators are welcome to partake in cornhole, ladder toss, and giant Jenga while enjoying food and beverages in between games or while your favorite team is on the pitch. Additionally, there will be various food trucks and vendors spread throughout Veterans Park.
There will also be a Youth Quidditch portion to the tournament where elementary, middle, and high school students are encouraged to learn how to play Quidditch. Youth meet at the Head Quarters tent on either Saturday or Sunday to fill out a waiver, receive a wristband, and head to the youth Quidditch field at a designated time. Teachers and equipment will be provided to all participating.
Who will win the close competition to be crowned Southwest Regional Champion this season? Find out this February 18-19 at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex. To stay up-to-date on tournament events, be sure to join the USQ 2017 Southwest Regional Championship Facebook page.
