April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The Sexual Assault Resource Center presents its second annual Sexual Assault Awareness Month Kickoff Event on Thursday, April 6, beginning at 5:30pm. This event is hosted by Anco Insurance and is open to the public or anyone interested in spreading awareness about this important cause. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served.
Sexual Assault can happen to anyone. A sexual assault happens every 107 seconds in the U.S. In Texas, 6.3 million residents have been sexually assaulted at some point in their lifetime; 2 in 5 women and 1 in 5 men affected. A recent study of college undergraduate students found that 23.1 percent female, 5.4 percentof male, and 21 percentof TGQN (transgender, genderqueer, nonconforming) are sexually assaulted through physical force, violence, or incapacitation; however 77 percent never report the offense because of shame, embarrassment, or the fear of the emotional toll it would take. With three large college campuses in our area, awareness is very important. The number of sexual assaults being reported has grown in our very own community. In 2016, the Sexual Assault Resource Center (SARC) served 256 NEW clients from the Brazos Valley. SARC provides 24-hour crisis intervention, with free and confidential services for survivors in Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Leon, Madison, Washington, and Robertson counties.
