Registration for the Golf Classic ends April 27.Gary Blair, head coach of the Women's Basketball Team at Texas A&M, is not stranger to winning. But when hosts the 9th Annual Coach Gary Blair Charities Celebrity Golf Classic on Friday, May 4, it won't matter what place Blair's athletes finish that he will remember -- it's the pure joy of participating. Blair says the first time he placed a medal around a child's neck at the Special Olympics that he was hooked. It didn't matter if the child was receiving a 1st place medal or 6th, the joy he saw in their eyes was indescribable.

"It's called the Special Olympics because these kids are truly special," says Blair, who has been involved with the Special Olympics for more than 20 years.

But when hosts the 9th Annual Coach Gary Blair Charities Celebrity Golf Classic on Friday, May 4, it won’t matter what place Blair’s athletes finish that he will remember — it’s the pure joy of participating. Blair says the first time he placed a medal around a child’s neck at the Special Olympics that he was hooked. It didn’t matter if the child was receiving a 1st place medal or 6th, the joy he saw in their eyes was indescribable.

“It’s called the Special Olympics because these kids are truly special,” says Blair, who has been involved with the Special Olympics for more than 20 years. Back in the summer of 2004, Blair hosted his first tournament in College Station and this will mark the 19th Special Olympic tournament Blair has hosted overall. This tournament will benefit Special Olympics Texas as well as other local charities.

Celebration Dinner and Silent Auction will be held May 3; Golf Classic will be May 4.What Blair enjoys most about the tournament is being able to give back to the community. “I’m going to give back as much as I can while I’m still in the spot light,” says Blair, “I want to encourage everyone to help others, as well as their community, because in return you’re really helping yourself.” Blair said that seeing the kids smile after finishing an event is one of the most rewarding things he has ever experienced.

A celebration dinner and silent auction will be held Thursday, May 3, at Hurricane Harry’s. All golfers are allowed one guest and a donation of $10 is requested at the door. Drinks and dinner are included as well as sponsor recognition and a wide variety of silent and live auction items available.

The Golf Classic will be held at the Traditions Golf Club. The flight time for Thursday is 12 p.m. Flight times for Friday are 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. The tournament will be scramble format. Prizes will be awarded for the morning and afternoon flights and on-course contests include a hole-in-one, casino hole and closest to the pin. For the tournament, Blair will be teaming your foursome with a celebrity, coach, or athlete from the county. Blair promises a great day of golf, fun, and prizes. The cost to play this year is $250 per person or $1,000 for a team of four. If you are interested, consider becoming a Medal Sponsor of the event.
